Naked Lunch

!! New CD released December
17th 2008 !! * See details below
*
In
1969 after Allmen Joy broke up, I got together with Abel Zarate on lead guitar and singer song writer, Rich Spremich on drums
and vocals, Roy Murray on trumpet and vocals, Bob Olivera on saxophone and
vocals, Charles Fletcher on bass guitar and vocals (Rick
Tiffer played bass at first, later replaced by Charles Fletcher) and Jose
Morerro
on conga drums
and vocals, We formed the band called Naked Lunch. The band is seen in the
photo above at the Fillmore West (1970) in San Francisco California. Pictured (from left
to right) is, myself on a Hammond C3 organ with the front cover removed (I bought
the organ without the cover but replaced it later on), Abel Zarate doing a
lead guitar solo and the conga player Jose Morerro. I left Naked Lunch not long after, as at
the time we were mostly playing a lot of free and benefit gig's for prestige and
exposure, financially the band was not making a lot of money. So I had to leave
the band and find another that was actually getting paid, because music was my only income. The
members of Naked Lunch merged with The Malibu's (Jorge Santana's band) and
became the popular band known as Malo (Suavecito).
Abel
Zarate
was (in my eye's) and is a most
superior musician, back in 1969, I was 21 years old and Abel was 16,
I thought (for his age) he was just as good as Santana maybe better, not as
seasoned but he was getting more polished each time we played together. I
have
followed his career since I left the band in 1971 and must admit a little
jealousy for not being part of it. Abel has always had a natural feel for
playing the guitar and writing songs. It seemed to come so easily to him as if
he were genetically programmed for it. I have inserted a portion of a interview
with Abel and
José Sierra on behalf of
Moonflower Cafe. Questions
compiled and edited by Jose Sierra and Gil Vera.
Hosted and coordinated by
José Sierra on behalf of Moonflower Cafe.
MC:
"Naked Lunch teamed you,
Roy Murray and Rich Spremich with organist Ludwig “Fist” Stevens (who had also
briefly replaced Greg Allman in the Allman Brothers band). Rick Tiffer played
bass at first, later replaced by Charles Fletcher. Naked Lunch famously upstaged
Creedence Clearwater at Fillmore West, and opened for Ray Charles and B.B. King.
You had a two-man horn section and Roy describes the sound as “powerful and
straight at you.” It must have been quite a potent band! Bill Graham almost
signed you to his new record label, Fillmore Records. Oh, and what was it about
William S. Burroughs’ novel “Naked Lunch” that fired your imagination?"
ABEL:
"Naked Lunch had a raw
sound: sort of Electric Flag meets Santana with a little Blues Image thrown in!
Roy Murray actually chose the name Naked Lunch…I had no clue who William S.
Burroughs was back then. Our horn section consisted of Bob Oliveira on tenor and
alto sax, from a musical family (with very good chops), and Roy, who played
trumpet, trombone, flute and soprano sax. José Marrero was on congas. We made
our mark, but due to our young arrogance and some very bad choices the Fillmore
Records people dropped us. After that, things weren’t looking good for the band.
Naked Lunch was pretty much defunct, so I took Chris Wong up on his offer to see
Jorge about forming Malo." Abel
is well known on the Bay Area music scene for his contribution to Latin-rock
band Malo. His songs appear on Malo's first and second albums
and include the band's international hit "Suavecito," which he co-wrote. Abel
has also recorded and performed with Pete Escovedo, Coke Escovedo, Willie Bobo,
Dizzy Gillespie, and Cal Tjader, among others. Through his career he has played
such notable venues as the Hollywood Bowl and Madison Square Garden, as well as
the Montreux and Newport Jazz Festivals. In the mid-'90s Abel enjoyed the
rekindled popularity of "Suavecito," receiving platinum and gold records for
Sugar Ray's sampling of that song on "Every Morning." Abel is now
working with Michelle Pollace. Zarate Pollace Project
http://www.zaratepollace.com
is a collaboration between Abel Zarate and Michelle Pollace (Po-LAH-chi)
showcasing original music that fuses contemporary jazz with Latin/Brazilian
grooves to create a positive and uplifting vibe for today. Abel is known for co-writing
the international hit song “Suavecito” while in Malo and also for penning “Latin
Lady,” which put Latin-music legend Willie Bobo back on the jazz charts. Abel
appears in the books Voices of Latin Rock (Ron Sansoe, Jim McCarthy),
The Rolling Stone Encyclopedia of Rock & Roll (Holly George-Warren, Patricia
Romanowski, and Jon Pareles), and Country Joe and Me (Ron Cabral). He has
been awarded a BMI Pop Awards Citation of Achievement for having co-written one
of the most-played pop songs of 1999 (Sugar Ray’s hit “Every Morning”).
Roy Murray
is a seasoned horn player. When I
knew Roy, his primary instrument was the trumpet, but I know he can also double
on most
of the other brass horns. Roy is an
accomplished musician in many styles of music from classical to jazz to rock and
everything
in
between.
Roy is an original member
of the Santana family bands and was very involved with members of Janis Joplin's
bands. His bands have played everywhere from the Fillmore West of San Francisco
to Carnegie Hall of New York City, and all the states that are in between and
beyond! He also has a part four different songs that hit the top 10 on the
Billboard Charts. Roy
currently has a music studio in North Carolina called
THE ROY MURRAY MUSIC
STUDIO
http://www.roymurray.com.
He is also
associated with
Outer Banks
Wedding Assoc. and
is the music
director for for the weddings.
Charles Fletcher
I didn't get to know Charles very
well, we didn't call him Charles anyway he always wanted to be known as Fletch
or Fletcher. Charles seemed to be a very private person, I don't think most of
the band members knew what he did outside the band functions
anyway.
Rich Spremich
is hot, he was hot even then,
way-back-when I knew him in the early days. Rich is a dynamic steady
drummer who holds down the back beat and keeps the ship steady and on
course. Richard, stated to Mark Guerrero
http://markguerrero.net,
that he along with
lead
guitarist Abel Zarate, Roy Murray, Bob Olivera, and Fist Stevens, were in
a band called Naked Lunch. When they were in their late teens, they
played a benefit concert with Tower of Power and Boz Scaggs and blew
everyone away. A Warner Brothers record executive was in the audience.
This led to the idea of combining members of Naked Lunch with members of
the Malibu's to form Malo. Richard Spremich, Abel Zarate, and Roy Murray
went with Malo. Richard played with Malo on their first two albums before
leaving the band. Richards new band is The Damascus Experience Band (TDX)
http://www.tdxband.com
is a Spirit-led group of
spiritual warriors that happen to be musicians
who worship God with Holy Spirit inspired lyrics, voices and instruments.
Using original songs to fuse global cultural rhythms in all styles of
music from Adult Contemporary to Jazz, and every style in between, they
acknowledge that "all good things come from God" and are to be used and
enjoyed for His Glory. Band members are Richard Spremich, Vincent Grimes,
David Knowlin, and Victor Bejarano. After losing his family and successful business to drugs and alcohol,
Richard heard "Amazing Grace" with a contemporary sound and came to the
Lord in 1991. God performed a healing miracle following injuries in three
auto accidents in 1982 that left him unable to play drums for more then 10
years. Richard has an intense desire to
explode the Gospel to the nations by drawing people to the Lord through
music and worship, using words and musical instruments. Here are a couple
of song Richard was kind enough to lend to this website.....>You
Have Not and
Tremble
Bob Olivera
is an excellent saxophone player, he
is accomplished in jazz, rock, solo and group horn lines.

Jose Morrero
can really pound out those
Afro/Latin rhythms, he is one of the most accomplished percussionist's I have
ever had the pleasure to perform with.
